Relationships require freedom to ebb and flow, and the best relationships have partners who know when being too positive will jam up the flow.

“How can being positive ruin anything?” you might be wondering.

If there’s too much positivity, without empathy, it can come across insensitive with an unwillingness to genuinely care. In the presence of empathy––according to Brene´ Brown––painful feelings don’t have a chance to survive.

What if “Adverse Childhood Experience” doesn’t fit?








Schools have been actively engaging in the conversation about the effects of trauma in childhood, and now Oprah is informing the nation. Awareness is rising. I’m thankful.

However, the thought that keeps creeping in my mind over the past couple of months has been what about the people who don’t meet the ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experience) criteria but still feel depressed or anxious?

What happened to them? If a childhood was “normal” and needs were easily met, why are they hurting? (more…)

How do you know “what’s best for kids”?








“We’re going to do what’s best for kids.” This cliché is often heard in education.

I began asking myself, “How do we know what’s best for kids?” How do I even know as a parent what’s best for my own kids? So when it struck me, I decided to add my voice to the whats-best-for-kids-bandwagon:

What’s best for kids is conscious adults.
