Schools have been actively engaging in the conversation about the effects of trauma in childhood, and now Oprah is informing the nation. Awareness is rising. I’m thankful.
However, the thought that keeps creeping in my mind over the past couple of months has been what about the people who don’t meet the ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experience) criteria but still feel depressed or anxious?

“We’re going to do what’s best for kids.” This cliché is often heard in education.
I began asking myself, “How do we know what’s best for kids?” How do I even know as a parent what’s best for my own kids? So when it struck me, I decided to add my voice to the whats-best-for-kids-bandwagon:
What’s best for kids is conscious adults.
This month marks 13 years of marriage for my husband and me. Oh, and I think it’s important to point out we’re not soul mates.
My mom told me once “the one” was not out there somewhere. “There are lots of people we’re compatible with, and we get to decide which one we want to spend the rest of our life with,” she said.
Her short quip grounded me that searching for someone outside myself to share a you-complete-me-Jerry-McGuire-moment would just keep me looking for my other half.
